Block ads in Google Chrome (and other tips)
Productivity blog Lifehacker had a few great posts about Chrome recently. First, ‘How to block ads in Google Chrome‘ does exactly what it promises - without the need for browser extensions (which aren’t yet available in Chrome). It’s all done via some free software called Privoxy:
1. Download and install Privoxy.
2. Click on the Wrench icon in Chrome in the upper right corner.
3. Choose options>Under The Hood>Change proxy settings.
4. In the Internet Properties dialog’s Connections tab, click on the LAN settings button.
5. Check off “Proxy settings” and in the address setting add 127.0.0.1 and in the port 8118.
6. If you have the option, you can also check off “Bypass proxy for local settings”.
7. Click “OK,” close Chrome and restart it.
Second, a tip on how to get updates of Chrome as soon as they are released by Google (currently nightly) to make sure you have the most secure and stable version of the browser.
Finally, Lifehacker has put together a comprehensive ‘Power User’s guide to using Google Chrome‘ which has tips on keyboard shortcuts, startup switches, themes, diagnostic info and…how to get rid of Google’s branding for your browser.
They are all great posts. Check them out.
